Press Release: Official Schedule of Events

Black Lesbian and Gay Pride Day, Inc. (DC Black Pride) is pleased to announce the schedule for the 23rd DC Black Pride festivities.  The DC Black Pride Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony will be on Friday, May 24 in the Thornton Room (11th floor) at the Hyatt Regency Washington Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue, NW Washington, DC from 6 - 8 p.m. The Hyatt Regency is the host hotel for the second year in a row. Washington DC Mayor Vincent Gray will be the recipient of the Eleanor Holmes Norton Award given to a local elected official who has been an advocate for LGBT rights in the community. The award was previously presented to Congresswoman Norton and, the DC City Council after they passed the same sex marriage law in 2010. 

The Welmore Cook Award for community service awardees will be long time community activists Dr. Imani Woody and Courtney Williams.  Additionally, DC Black Pride have added a new award this year, the DC Black Pride Leadership Award presented to Black LGBT community leaders who are thirty years old or under. Theara Coleman and Christopher Watson are this year's awardees.  Donald Burch III will receive the first Charlotte Smallwood Volunteer Award for his many years of volunteerism with DC Black Pride. The Opening Reception is a free event with heavy hors d’oeuvres and cash bar followed by the ever popular Speed Dating from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.  DC Black Pride will offer a game room with board games and playing cards on both Friday and Saturday evening from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. — all in the host hotel.

DC Black Pride will be hosting a special community town hall meeting, “Are We Prepared to Address Homophobia in the Black Church” from 11 a.m. to noon followed by eight workshops from noon to 2 pm.. This year's Film Festival promises to be the best ever featuring "Friend of Essex" with a Q & A with film maker Amir Dixon; "Pariah, Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom," "God Loves Uganda and You Are Not Alone" with a Q & A with the executive producer Antoine Craigwell. The Film Festival runs from 1 to 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased for $20 in the hospitality suite.  ButtaFlySoul will be hosting the open mic Poetry Slam once again from 7 to 9 p.m. (tickets $10).  All of these events will take place in the host hotel and the Hospitality Suite will be open from noon – 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.

DC Black Pride will be hosting our first Post Happy Hour sponsored by Barefoot Bubbly Wines on Saturday evening from 7 PM – 10 PM featuring DJ Freeze at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street, NW near the U Street Metro (free). DC Black Pride ends on Sunday, May 26 with our Interfaith Service from 9 to 11 a.m. at the host hotel and the Health & Wellness Festival at the Francis-Stevens Educational Campus 2425 N Street, NW DC near DuPont Circle from noon to 6 p.m. featuring entertainment, vendors and health screenings.
