Genise Chambers-Woods

2018 President’s Award

Genise Chambers-WoodsGenise Chambers-Wood is a native of Washington, D.C. who was introduced to DC Black Pride by her grandmother and godmother. As a first time volunteer in 2012, her passion and efficiency quickly resulted in her appointment to the position of volunteer coordinator, then later to the position of director of vending and volunteers. She received the Charlotte Smallwood Volunteer of the Year Award in 2015.

Genise began her advocacy work while working as a HIV care manager for Unity Health Care. She met so many gay men of color that needed all around support and went above and beyond to give them any help that they needed. In doing this work she gained multiple certifications in HIV and HEP health. She has also worked alongside five well known ID specialists in the DC area. Even though she no longer works for Unity Health Care, she is still contacted by my former patients and continue to help them when she can.

She is a mother of three to Andre, Genae and Tsihai and wife to LaVonne, and she received her education through DC Public Schools and studied social work and nursing at Trinity University. Genise is a devoted mentor, advocate, activist and lover of all people who believes ‘it takes all communities to build a SOLID community.’ —April 2018
