Dear Family,
As we embrace 20 years of a ‘legacy’ supporting enthusiasm for the recognition of our ‘black pride’, the 2010 DC Black Pride Board understands that it is imperative to the success of our annual Black Pride celebration to have our community involved. We chose the theme, “The Legacy Lives!” because we have lost many brothers and sisters along the way, but they charted a path of a now rich heritage. Our memories and current successes continue to support this ‘legacy’. Surely, we have much to celebrate this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend!
While we have been silently working behind the scenes for the past few months, we have been spending time laying the groundwork for you to bring your creativity, skills and passion to our event planning for this wonderful week. In this our 20th year of Black Pride, we want to honor our past, recognize our now and envision our future. We want you to be an active participant in the planning process. We wouldn’t think of planning without you!
As members of this community, we hope that you will join us in producing the kind of educational and celebratory event that makes you proud to be members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender African American/Black community of the Metropolitan DC area. And while we can’t support every issue or cause, know that we recognize that we must provide you with a balanced celebration. We want you to assist us in presenting ‘edutainment’ for our community. Let’s party with a purpose in honor of where we have been and where we are going. For one year we are all 20 years old!
The Board is mindful that our community has changed so much in 20 years. More of us have children and there is the real prospect of marriage in the District. Yet some us still struggle with the affirmation of our families, HIV/AIDS continues to dominate despite our advocacy efforts and so many of our youth are living on the streets. This year, we want to have something for ‘the children and something for the kids’. We want to provide education and celebration for young and old and provide an experience for our youth that helps them to understand where we have been and who they can be. We want to embrace our transgender community and our sisters and brothers with children. We want to recognize the hard working members of our community who are on the frontlines of the non-profit agencies who represent us. You can help us plan and celebrate our community’s ‘legacy’.
Please take a moment to review the Chair and Committee opportunities. The Board invites you to be a part of the ‘legacy’. Send us your photos, your stories, testimonies of loved ones and your talent to info@dcblackpride.org. Join us in planning the event of the year, “The Legacy Lives!”.
With Love and in Support of Community,
The 2010 DC Black Pride Board
