DC Black Pride 2010: 20 Years Later The Legacy Lives!

Announces DC Black Pride Awardees

WASHINGTON, DC (May 7, 2010)—

Black Lesbian and Gay Pride Day, Inc (DC Black Pride) is pleased to announce the Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Welmore Cook awardees for DC Black Pride 2010.The awards ceremony will take place during the 2010 DC Black Pride Opening Reception on Friday, May 28, 2010 in the Hamilton Ballroom at the Hamilton Crown Plaza Hotel located at 14th and K Streets, NW Washington, DC from 7 – 10 PM. This year’s theme is “20 Years Later The Legacy Lives!” reflects the rich heritage of DC Black Pride and the  contributions made by the Washington, DC Black LGBT community over the past 20 years as well as fostering the start of the Black Pride movement around the world.

The DC City Council will present the Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Award to the District of Columbia City Council for their support of same sex marriage. The Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Award is given to a member(s) of the political community who has championed the rights and dignity of the Black LGBT community

Jeffrey Richardson and Charlotte Smallwood will be presented with the Welmore Cook Award which is present annually to two members of the local Black LGBT community for outstanding leadership.  Welcome Cook was one of the co-founders of DC Black Pride. Jeffery Richardson is the president of Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and past Vice Chair of the DC State Democratic Party.  Charlotte Smallwood was a long time LGBT activist who passed away on April 12, 2010.  Her sister will Iris Johnson will be accepting the award on behalf of the family.

In addition, DC Black Pride 2010 will feature our Hospitality Suite, Poetry Slam, Writer’s Forum, Workshops, and Church Service all at the host hotel.  Our highly acclaimed Fashion Show will be at the Sphinx Club located 1315 K Street, NW around the corner from the Hamilton Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday, May 29 starting at 10 PM. The DC Black Pride Health & Wellness Festival will return to the Walter Washington Convention Center on Sunday May 30 from 1 – 7 PM featuring national recording artist J. Holiday, Beat Ya Feet Kings and Shiqueeta Lee.
