J Holiday Bio:

In mid-2007, a reserved, amicable, soon-to-be-star shuffled out of a hotel elevator for his initial biography interview. His earnest, boyish features creased repeatedly into easy grins, and his unaffected, endearing manner reflected a sturdy upbringing and a refreshing newness to the entertainment game. The world had yet to meet J. Holiday. Well, what a difference a year makes. Now in late 2008, having put the finishing touches on his sophomore album Round 2, the 25-year-old singer sat for this current biography with a quiet purposefulness, a portfolio overflowing with praise, and a global fan base at his fingertips.

“It’s been an amazing year, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” he reflects in typically understated fashion. “You always balance your hopes about what the fans will appreciate versus the reality that it might not work out.” By accomplishments, he means: consecutive back-to-back #1 R&B singles “Bed” and “Suffocate;” utterlyusurping of BET’s 106 & Park; his album Back of my ‘Lac debuting #1 on the R&B chart and selling nearly 800,000 copies; BET and American Music Award nominations for Best Male R&B Artist; and the most recent capstone—a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. “I’m glad to have the respect of my peers,” he says about the Grammy nod. “It’s nice to be recognized for putting out real music.”
Bridging 2007 and 2008, J. Holiday took to the road, wooing fans from Texas to Tokyo. He crashed the public consciousness as part of R. Kelly’s ground shaking 40-stop Double Up tour, alongside Ne-Yo and Keyshia Cole. He also crisscrossed the country co- headlining a 21-stop tour with fellow crooner Trey Songz. Amidst all that, he found time to lend a breathy hook to Fat Joe’s club sizzler “I Won’t Tell.” “I’m still new to all this, but I also feel seasoned,” J. remarks ironically. “A lot of the game I can do without, but I love being on stage. So I just lose myself in that. And at the end of the day, I’m first and foremost a fan. On the Double Up tour I’d perform first, then go sit in the crowd for the rest of the show. People never understood that; it was never about me being seen, it was about watching R. Kelly and Keyshia and Ne-Yo. I’m out there taking notes. On some level, as the new guy, I had to prove that I could hold my own with them.”

Fittingly, Round 2 boasts an impressive roster; lead single “It’s Yours” springs from the artful hands of StreetLove production/writing team members Big Reese (Mario, T.I., Andre 3000, Pink) and Jasper Cameron (Ciara, Tiffany Evans, Christina Aguilera). Unsurprisingly, “It’s Yours,” with its soothing, seductive sound and J.’s enviably trademark falsetto flourishes, is the #1 most-added R&B song to mainstream urban radio. Asked to describe the song, J. looked sheepishly at the floor and said, “I guess J. Holiday is falling in love.” He laughed off this writer’s subsequent quip: “Yeah, he’s known to do that,” a wink to his romantically-themed hits.

All kidding aside, J.’s old-soul sensibilities and God-given attributes leave little wonder as to the colossal success bestowed upon this preacher’s son. But he’s

not content to rest on his laurels or regurgitate recycled material. “I’m definitely on another, more mature level now,” he confirms. “Some of the songs on this album you’d never have heard on the first album. And it’s going to continue to be a growth process; I hope my music never stays the same. I don’t want to be stuck in a box. I want people to say ‘I like J’s music’ and not ‘Did you hear that one song he did?’”

Unusual discourse in today’s single-obsessed musical climate. Indeed, Round 2 runs deep, devoid of the filler and half-hearted attempts plaguing other offerings in the genre. “Lights Go Out” is a dawdling, dripping, soul-slathered freak fest produced by Allstar AKA The Big Beat Maker. “Forever Ain’t Enough” is stripped-down balladic beauty. The pulsing “Fall” manages to touch the heart and nod the head, reminiscent of transcendent ‘80’s R&B. “Sing 2 U” throbs in a similar vein; J. Holiday appropriately references the Chi-Lites and name checks Marvin Gaye and Jodeci in the first verse. “Fly” is spirited and celestial, and its synthesized hook subtly knocks the current wave of pseudo-singers clogging up the airwaves. Meanwhile, fans wanting for some harder fare will dig ”Wrong Lover”, a collaboration with Floridian flame spitter Rick Ross. There’s a whole lot here to like.

Round 2 is dense, deliberate, and destined for the rarified air gulped in by Back of My ‘Lac. But again, critical and commercial triumph isn’t enough for J. Holiday. He’s tackling weighty issues, another anomaly given today’s artists’ reluctance to stick their necks out. The song “Homeless,” is probing social commentary. It’s also the precursor to a larger endeavor: “I’m working on a homeless awareness campaign,” he shares. “I’m actually in the process of starting a foundation. I’m just trying to do my part; it’s an issue I feel people don’t pay enough attention to. It’s always been in the back of my mind, and now I’m in a position to better address it. This isn’t to get any personal recognition, it’s just to show how many people this still affects. I’m coming at this not looking at myself first at all.” J. plans to appear in a TV commercial, dressed in rags and posing as an indigent on New York City’s unforgiving streets, as passersby step over him. Another admirable feather in J. Holiday’s familiar fedora, although this writer’s half-serious suggestion that the campaign’s motto be “I’m a give you a bed, bed, bed,” was laughingly dismissed.

J. Holiday has made a home in fans’ hearts and ears. In turn, his epic one-year odyssey has opened his own eyes: “Being inside the game has given me a whole different perspective. I would like to think that I’m very good at what I do, and I believe in my craft, but I still feel blessed. I have done a lot more than some very talented people who were in my position at one point in time, in the timeframe that I’ve done it. I’m still new to all this. But I can’t worry myself about what other people are doing. I know just by staying me, my music is going to stand on its own.” So too will the world stand, and applaud.

Local actors Monte J. Wolfe, David Lamont Wilson, Donald Burch III, David Richardson, Kendell Lee, Sampson, Kris Broadway and Jason Evan Barrett are featured as, for the twelfth consecutive year, African-American Collective Theater (ACT) unveils a new gay-themed play in observance of D.C. Black Pride Weekend.

Sunday, May 30, 2010, ACT mounts the staged reading of the new drama by ACT founder/artistic director Alan Sharpe, as this year’s offering in an event that has become a Memorial Day weekend ritual for D.C. residents and visitors in town to celebrate the holiday and D.C. Black Pride. It continues a tradition, begun back in 1992 and inspired by the very first D.C. Black Pride celebration, which was held the previous year.

According to founder, Alan Sharpe, ACT’s annual event is a fundraiser for the production company’s various theater and film projects supporting its mission to “…showcase contemporary BLGBT life and culture, promote visibility and raise awareness of issues facing our community.”

This year’s performances, at 5:30 and 8 p.m., will once again be presented at the Warehouse Theater, which is currently undergoing renovations. The original entrance is now a restaurant, The Passenger. During construction, the entrance for theatrical performances has been moved around the corner to 645 New York Avenue, N.W., one block away from the D.C. Convention Center where D.C. Black Pride’s “LEGACY FESTIVAL AND WELLNESS EXPO” is being held earlier that afternoon.

Wale Backs Out of DC Black Pride Performance

WASHINGTON, DC (May 21, 2010)—

Black Lesbian and Gay Pride Day, Inc (DC Black Pride) Board of Directors regrets to announce that once again, an Artist and his management has shunned LGBT patrons—the very patrons that buy their records, purchase show tickets, and attend their concerts. Wale and his management team are the latest to join on the unappreciative band wagon and in effect say–thanks but no thanks to gay people!

In mid-April 2010, a talent and booking agent approached Wale’s agents/management team to make an offer for Wale to perform at the 20th DC Black Pride Festival/Health & Wellness Expo on Sun., May 30th at the DC Convention Center. Wale—the self-proclaimed “Ambassador of Rap for the Capital”—and his management team were initially interested, and were then verbally informed that the host of this event was a LGBT organization. Wale’s agents/management team then said that Wale was unavailable and had another event out of town that day.

In early May, Wale’s team approached our DC Black Pride’s representatives and stated that Wale’s event fell through, and they were now interested in performing at our event. DC Black Pride was informed that Wale’s team wanted to move forward; thus, an offer was made and accepted by Wale and his agents/management team, and the contract was signed between DC Black Pride (via representative) and the talent/booking agency on May 10, 2010. The talent/booking agent also emailed Wale’s team a letter from the DC Black Pride Board of Directors describing the organization, its mission, and the weekend’s events.

On Friday, May 14th, DC Black Pride made its grand announcement that Hip-Hop artist/Rapper Wale would be performing at our event. The entire Black LGBT community was excited that a straight popular rapper would appear at DC Black Pride. On May 18, 2010, DC Black Pride was told that Wale was no longer available. At first his management team told the booking agent that Wale wanted to spend more time with his family – Wale lives in the metropolitan area. Then the management team accused the booking agent of not fully disclosing details of the event. After subsequent conversations, it has become further apparent that Wale’s management team did not want to appear at a Black LGBT event–even one called a Health and Wellness Expo. Fortunately, J Holiday has agreed to step in and be the headliner on Sunday, May 30th.

DC Black Pride believes that homophobia in our community is unacceptable and while Wale’s advance payment was returned, his actions are an insult to the Black LGBT community. The DC Black Pride Board of Directors will consider appropriate legal and community action after the Black Pride weekend.

With her product line Renee France Designs, which caters to the needs of women and children, Renee is on the fast lane to becoming a designer to be reckoned with. It makes us wonder who the woman behind the label is.

Born in Brooklyn NY in the 60s, Renee’s fashion sense was apparent at a very early age when she would take every cent she could get her hands on (most often her lunch money) to buy material to jazz up her Barbie dolls. With a keen sense for detail, Renee would whip together outfits that would make Barbie look like she had just stepped off the runway in France or Milan. As a teen and young adult, Renee would always forengo wearing less expensive clothes opting to wear exquisite pieces created by her originality. Renee has often stated I believe we express our feelings through the colors and textures we choose for our clothing. Well Renee has certainly expressed emotions that are out of this stratosphere with her immaculate sense of style.

Hughes; I am an up and coming fashion designer in the Maryland and Washington DC area. My clothing line is made up of the following: pride, lust, envy, greed, gluttony, sloth, and wrath; which are known as the 7 deadly sins. In addition, it’s a mixture of couture, mod, vintage, punk, gothic, Victorian, and last but not least urban. These 7 styles of fashion help me come up with the name 7ds, which are short for 7 deadly sins. I feel it’s a sin to wear my garments. 7ds was made up of my life experiences of living a life of sins and turn it around to a positive outlook on life. If you are a trend setter, then 7ds is for you. It’s out the box; when it come to me making, and designing garments. So in 2004, my aunt gave me a sewing machine, so I started cutting up plain tee shirts and sewing them together. Furthermore, from there I have done numerous fashion shows in Maryland, Washington DC, and New York. I also had my own small modeling troop to display my garments. I’ am waiting for the day to attend The Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T) in New York City, so I can receive my Associate Degree in fashion design. With Gods’ will, I’ll be attending F.I.T., in January 2011. What’s funny is that all of my idea’s come from my dream’s; I make my dream’s come to life.

The Vision of an Entrepreneur
By Patricia Corbett

Ask Linda McAllister, Owner of Lace Restaurant and Night Club, the meaning of ‘black pride’ and her resounding response is always “Black Pride is Black Owned.” Linda exemplifies the spirit of black entrepreneurship as the sole proprietor of an establishment that serves an array of women in both the African American and LGBT communities. She is what some may call a triple threat. Linda is black, she is lesbian and she is an entrepreneur.

While some have lifelong dreams of ownership, Linda did not relocate to the Metro DC area for the purpose of being a nightclub owner. A native of North Carolina, when she arrived in DC, like most, she expected to find a robust nightlife. After all, DC is often referred to as a Mecca for LGBT people, attracting people of all cultures and ethnic backgrounds who want to indulge their need for self-expression. But Linda wasn’t prepared for what she would find when she went out on the town. Considering the size of the African American and lesbian community in DC, she was surprised to discover that, while there were many women who produced events, there was only one club that exclusively served women. Linda was appalled and decided she would do something about this void.

However, although many women shared her sentiment, they didn’t believe that she could meet the challenge. After all, would women support this endeavor? But despite those who tried to discourage her, with determination and tenacity, she began to create a business plan. Linda challenged herself to create a space that was exclusively for women, offering an aesthetically appealing environment and fabulous food. Thankfully, Linda’s resolve proved to be stronger than those who doubted her ability to achieve this major endeavor. She continued to pursue her vision and showed no sign of acquiescing. She was determined to offer a place where woman were honored.

The result of her labor was, as she refers to it, “Sophisticated. Mature. Sexy. Diva. You.” The grand opening of Lace, November 15, 2009 in Northeast D.C.’s Brookland neighborhood filled a void for women and provides a much-needed upscale experience. Thus, Lace- “Where Every Night is Ladies Night” has become a key location for women who love great drinks, sumptuous food and a beautiful environment for lounging with friends and entertaining guest locally and nationally. Through the entire experience, the true entrepreneur she is, Linda has never lost her belief and enthusiasm about Lace’s success. She revisits her vision regularly and is constantly looking for different avenues of success.

The fact is Linda has a more expansive vision for Lace. While she appreciates being approached with nightlife opportunities, she wants the Lace space available for more than parties and receptions. She wants to give back to the community who supports her vision. Her concept was to create a business that was exemplary of entrepreneurship and devoted to the betterment of the community. She wants Lace to become a communal place that is open to organizations that support the entire community. Whether it’s a book signing, a meeting for new Moms or meeting place for businesses and organizations, Linda wants to vary the usage of the club. She frequently offers the Lace space for educational and community events. Presently, the club houses a variety of weekly events from parties to poetry. Linda proudly opens her doors to all women and members of the LGBT community who wish to utilize the space for a multitude of purposes. She is even considering opening during lunch hours for business luncheons and to serve the Brookland community.

Since its establishment, Lace is not only impressively ‘black owned’, but has become one of the most refreshing businesses to open its doors to the LGBT community. One visit to Lace, and women will understand why Linda McAllister is not only due admiration for such an ambitious undertaking, but why women keep coming back, bringing friends and family. Lace is ‘Black Owned’ with ‘Black Pride’.

Lace has graciously hosted several Black Pride events, is a proud Community Partner and is the official Woman’s space for DC Black Pride.

Lace is located at 2214 Rhode Island Ave. NE. is open some Thursdays, 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sundays. A $10 cover charge applies after 10 p.m. For more information about weekly events and relevant news about our people and our community visit www.lacedc.com or call 202-832-3888.
